Dental Cavities
A cavity is just a hole. A dental cavity is a hole in a tooth caused by tooth decay.
To fix a cavity, the dentist cleans out the hole with a drill, then fills it with something hard and long lasting.
In Roman times, people used to fill cavities with lead because lead is soft enough to shape easily. Later layers of fine, clean gold were used.
Nowadays filling can be:
- metal amalgams of silver, tin, zinc, copper, and mercury
- a mix of plastic and fine glass particles
- porcelain
- gold alloy
